Dinghy cruising in the Solent

Posted in Sailing by Joseph Moore on October 27, 2010

This is great: “The Solent Cruising Guide for Centreboard Boats” by Cliff Martin. I stumbled across it the other week (hopefully he doesn’t mind me reproducing it here) and it brings back great memories of trips around the Blackwater estuary when I was in the Scouts. Worth a read just to get a different perspective on sailing, even if you only own a boat with a huge lump of metal fixed to the bottom of it…

For anyone sailing the Solent on a budget, or just looking for some impartial information on the harbours and creeks to be found near there have a read of Alan Holmes’ website, the tightwad sailor. It’s not the most up to date but it’s well written by a real sailor with a real grasp on how expensive boating can be, not by the tourist board or marinas themselves.

However, if you’re feeling a bit plush, the showers at East Cowes Marina and Berthon Lymington Marina are ridiculously good!

Solent Sailing – August Bank Holiday

Posted in Sailing by Joseph Moore on September 25, 2009

A friend of mine has a Van De Stadt Rebel 41 moored down in Southampton and plans were laid to take her across to the Channel Islands for a couple of days over the bank holiday weekend.

Thursday night saw forecasts of strong winds so discrection being the better part of valour we opted to stay put and stuff our faces with pizza. Friday dawned to some pretty serious southwesterly gales and big waves making their way all the way up the solent with no sign of letting up: looked like going to sea wasn’t the best idea. Cue a weekend of cruising around the solent just enjoying being on the water, taking photos and getting a bit salty.
